MVP Books, a new
imprint of Voyageur Press, one of the leading publishers of regional
books, is publishing Boston Red Sox
and the Meaning of Life, a collection of some of the
best-known, wittiest, pithiest, and most entertaining writings,
quotes, and quips about the Red Sox. Included are acute
observations such as Boston manager Terry Francona’s “If we could
have scored one more run than the White Sox in each game, I think we
would have won the series” and John Cheever’s “All literary men are
Red Sox fans.” The franchise that has gone from dynasty to dud and
back to dynasty has inspired a wealth of comments from pundits and
wisecrackers, legends and castoffs, players and fans. Illustrated
with 200 historic and modern photographs, this is an entertaining
look at one of sport’s most beloved franchises through words and
images.

Spring Training Notes 2009
When last you
saw the Red Sox, they had fallen just shy of making a second
successive trip to the World Series. But the sting from Game
7 of last year's American League Championship Series can
officially subside on Thursday, when pitchers and catchers
report to the warmth of Fort Myers, Fla., for the start of
Spring Training.
Baseball is
here again, and that always means a lot to the rabid and
mammoth audience referred to as Red Sox Nation.
Yet again, the
Red Sox have what is projected to be one of the elite teams
in the game. The pitching is deep, as the core of Josh
Beckett, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Jonathan Papelbon
will be helped by new additions like Brad Penny, John Smoltz
and Takashi Saito.
Catcher Jason
Varitek, the captain, will again anchor that pitching staff
after re-signing on Friday.
The actual
reporting day is more symbolic than anything, as pitchers
and catchers will merely be required to inform the team that
they have arrived in Fort Myers. On Friday, they will come
in for physicals.
Saturday is
when the Red Sox take their first unified steps of 2009, as
pitchers and catchers will have their first formal workout.
Not much time
will pass before the rest of the squad joins them. Position
players are due to report on Feb. 16, followed by physicals
the next day and then the first full-squad workout on Feb.
18.
The offense
will be led by familiar faces, such as reigning AL Most
Valuable Player Dustin Pedroia, gritty first baseman Kevin
Youkilis and what the Red Sox will hope to be a rejuvenated
David Ortiz.
"I've talked to
a lot of the guys recently, and everyone is fired up and
ready to go," said Pedroia. "We're going to have a great
team. I think everybody is motivated after last year, being
one game away. Everyone has been working hard in the
offseason to get prepared for that long run. We're excited
about everything."
All workouts
will be held at the Minor League complex. The team will then
take the two-mile trek down Edison Avenue and move camp to
City of Palms Park for the start of the exhibition season on
Feb. 25.
The early
portion of camp will take on added importance this year,
because several members of the team will be departing in
early March for the World Baseball Classic. Pedroia and
Youkilis are suiting up for Team USA. Left fielder Jason Bay
will represent Canada. Ortiz is expected to play for the
Dominican Republic. Matsuzaka will start his Spring Training
in Japan and will report to the Red Sox once the Classic is
over.
For the first
time since 2001, Manny Ramirez will not be a dominant topic
during Spring Training. In all eight years that the star was
with Boston, there was always a mystery of whether he'd
arrive on time to camp. There will be no parking-lot
stakeouts by the media this time around, as Ramirez was
dealt by the Sox last July 31.
Ramirez's
replacement -- Bay -- will have his first full season with
Boston after adapting seamlessly to the club amid the
pressure of the pennant race last year.
Manager Terry
Francona is embarking on his sixth season at the helm.
"I think we
have reason to be excited," said Francona. "I think we've
got versatility; I think we've got some depth. I like our
team."
Francona will
use camp as a chance to get to know newcomers Penny, Smoltz,
Saito and Rocco Baldelli, all of whom had their 2008 seasons
shortened for health reasons.
"Hopefully,
they get healthy, get strong and help us win," said Red Sox
reliever Manny Delcarmen.
When last
season ended, Boston was a banged-up bunch. But after a
winter of rest, most of those aches have likely gone away.
"If David stays
healthy, J.D. [Drew], all those guys, I think we're going to
have a strong lineup," Delcarmen said. "I think our pitching
is there. It's been there, so I think we'll be good.
